Carol MacKintosh - Deputy Chair

Carol MacKintosh is Professor of Molecular Signalling at the University of Dundee and a group leader in the Medical Research Council Protein Phosphorylation Unit. She was born in Inverness, studied Biochemistry at the University of Aberdeen and did her PhD at the University of Glasgow with Professor Hugh Nimmo. Carol joined the laboratory of Professor Sir Philip Cohen at the University of Dundee to study how skeletal muscle responds to insulin, before widening her research area to encompass studies on cyanobacterial protein phosphatase inhibitors and plant cell signalling, supported by personal Research Fellowships from the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council from 1990 to 1999. This work led her group to discover that 14-3-3 proteins mediate many human and plant cell responses to nutrients and growth factors, which is the focus of her current research.
